Curaçao has more than 35 beaches, and almost none of them look like the long, flat stretches you'll find in Aruba. Instead you get small coves (called playas and knips) tucked between limestone cliffs, with water so clear you can watch fish from the shore. That's great news for snorkelers, but it also means picking the right beach matters.
This guide sorts the island's best beaches by region and by what they're best for, so you can plan beach days around your rental car route instead of zig-zagging across the island.
01Quick picks
02West end beaches (Westpunt & Banda Abou)
The west end, around 45 minutes to an hour's drive from Willemstad, is where most of the postcard beaches are. Plan one or two full days out here and hop between three or four coves.
1. Grote Knip (Kenepa Grandi)
The beach on half the island's postcards: a bright white crescent below a lookout point, with water that shifts from turquoise to deep blue. Stop at the viewpoint on the road above first for the photo, then head down. It gets busy on weekends when locals come out, so arrive early.
2. Kleine Knip (Kenepa Chiki)
Grote Knip's little sister, a few minutes' drive away. Smaller, calmer and usually less crowded, with a few palapa shade huts that go fast in the morning.
3. Playa Lagun
A narrow cove squeezed between tall cliffs, with colorful fishing boats on the sand. The snorkeling along the rocky edges is excellent, and turtles are often spotted here. Brave visitors cliff-jump from the side; check depth and conditions first.
4. Playa Piskado (Playa Grandi)
Fishermen clean their catch on the pier here, and the scraps attract green sea turtles almost every day. Swim out a short way from the pier and there's a good chance you'll be snorkeling alongside them. Don't touch, chase or feed them, and give them space.
5. Playa Kalki
Near Westpunt and popular with divers thanks to a reef that starts close to shore. Calm, clear water and a laid-back vibe make it good for confident snorkelers too.
6. Playa Jeremi
A peaceful cove with fewer facilities and fewer people. Bring water, snacks and shade, and enjoy one of the more natural-feeling beaches on the island.
Westpunt has small dive resorts and vacation rentals that put you minutes from these beaches.
03Central coast
7. Cas Abao
One of the most comfortable beaches on the island: soft sand, calm water, a restaurant and bar, restrooms, showers and lounger rentals. You pay an entrance fee, but for families or anyone who wants an easy day, it's worth it.
8. Playa Porto Marie
A wide, well-kept beach with a double reef just offshore that makes for some of the island's best snorkeling from the sand. There's a restaurant, rentals and a dive shop.
9. Daaibooi
A small bay tucked between cliffs, with a simple snack bar and clear, calm water. It's popular with locals on Sundays and a solid low-cost alternative to the managed beaches nearby.
04Near Willemstad
If you're staying in or near the capital, these beaches are 10–20 minutes away. They're more developed, with beach clubs, music and restaurants, and the sand is often man-made, but they're perfect for an afternoon after exploring town.
10. Mambo Beach
Curaçao's party beach, with a boardwalk of bars, restaurants and shops right behind the sand. Lively during the day and even busier on weekend nights.
11. Jan Thiel Beach
Stylish beach clubs on a sheltered bay, with daybeds, cocktails and a resort feel. Better for lounging and people-watching than swimming laps.
05Klein Curaçao
12. Klein Curaçao
An uninhabited island off the southeast coast with a powder-white beach, an old lighthouse and a rusting shipwreck. You can only get there on an organized boat trip, usually a full day with lunch and snorkeling stops included. The crossing can be rough, so take seasickness precautions if you need them.
Compare full-day catamaran tours with lunch, snorkel gear and turtle stops.
06Beach-day tips
- Rent a car. Public buses exist but are infrequent, and the best beaches are spread across the island.
- Bring water shoes. Many coves have rocky or coral-rubble entries.
- Use reef-safe sunscreen (mineral, no oxybenzone) and a rash guard. The sun is intense this close to the equator.
- Don't leave valuables in your car. Break-ins at remote beach parking lots do happen. Leave the glovebox open and nothing on the seats.
- Pack your own snorkel gear if you plan to snorkel a lot; rentals at small beaches can be limited.
07FAQ

Which Curaçao beach is best for kids?
Cas Abao and Porto Marie: calm water, soft sand and full facilities.
Where can I swim with sea turtles?
Playa Piskado is the most reliable spot, with turtles frequently seen near the fishermen's pier. Playa Lagun and Klein Curaçao are also good.
Does Curaçao have sargassum seaweed?
The island's leeward (south and west) beaches are generally less affected than many other Caribbean islands, but conditions vary by season and year.
